PH 13-8 Mo* stainless is a martensitic precipitation/age-hardening stainless steel capable of high strength and hardness along with good levels of resistance to both general corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking. In addition, the alloy exhibits good ductility and toughness in large sections in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. The excellent properties of PH 13-8 Mo stainless are obtained through close control of chemical composition and micro structure plus specialized melting which reduces impurities and minimizes segregation. Compared to other ferrous-based materials, this alloy offers a high level of useful mechanical properties under severe environmental conditions.
13-8 Mo stainless has good fabrication characteristics and can be age-hardened by a single low temperature treatment. Cold work prior to aging increases the aging, especially for lower aging temperatures.
13-8 Mo stainless has been used for valve parts, fittings, cold-headed and machined fasteners, shafts, landing gear parts, pins, lock washers, aircraft components, nuclear reactor components and petrochemical applications requiring resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. Generally, this alloy should be considered where high strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and resistance to stress-corrosion cracking are required in a steel showing minimal directionality in properties.

17-4PH Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel Alloy (S17400), Type 630, is a chromium-nickel-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel used for applications requiring high strength and a moderate level of corrosion resistance. High strength is maintained to approximately 600°F (316°C).The 17-4 PH stainless steel alloy is martensitic in structure in the annealed condition and is further strengthened by a low temperature treatment which precipitates a copper containing phase in the alloy. In comparison to many alloys in the precipitation hardening family, the S17400 (17-4 PH) alloy requires a simple heat treatment; a one step process conducted at a temperature in the range 900°F (482°C) to 1150°F (621°C) depending on the combination of strength and toughness desired. A wide range of properties can be produced by this one step heat treatment.

Chandan Steel 15-5 PH Stainless Steel is supplied from the mill in Condition A, ready for fabrication and subsequent heat treatment by the user. Eight standard heat treatments have been developed to provide a wide range of properties to meet specific applications: H 900 H 1075 H 1150 1150 H 925 H 1100 H 1150-M H 1025 H 1150 H1025
CORROSION RESISTANCE
The general level of corrosion resistance exceeds that of Types 410 and 431, and is approximately equal to that ofChandan Steel 17-4 PH Stainless Steel as indicated by laboratory tests in both strongly oxidizing and reducing media, as well as by atmospheric exposures. The general level of corrosion resistance is best in the fully hardened condition, and decreases slightly as the aging temperature is increased.
FABRICATION
Because the alloy in Condition A is strong, forming normally should be limited to mild operations. However, fabriSteel. When a weld filler is needed, AWS E/ER 630 is most often specified. Chandan Steel 15-5 PH Stainless Steel is well known in reference literature and more information can be obtained in this way. Stainless steel 15 – 5 PH, also known as UNS S15500 or XM-12, is a modification of 17-4 PH developed in the 60′s. UNS S15500 stainless steel has a more refined microstructure as a result of the remelting process in which it was developed. This refined structure enhances toughness, especially in the transverse direction of the material. UNS S15500 also has excellent corrosion resistance, good fabricating characteristics and low temperature hardening which makes Stainless Steel 15 – 5 PH® the preferred alloy for many industries.

15-5 PH Sheet
15-5 precipitation hardened (PH) stainless steel sheet exhibits good transverse strength and fatigue resistance as well as good corrosion resistance. It is a cost-effective material, offering many of the same properties as more expensive high-nickel, non-ferrous alloys. Its high performance in high wear, corrosive environments make it a popular material for many industrial applications, especially for the aerospace, food service, metalworking, chemical and petrochemical industries.
While inherently strong and durable, 15-5 PH stainless steel can be further strengthened with a three-step heat-treatment process. The first step is to condition the metal using austenite. Step two is to allow the metal to cool until the austenite turns to martensite. The final step is to precipitation-harden the stainless steel until it reaches one of eight standard conditions - H 900, H 925, H 1025, H 1075, H 1100, H 1150, H 1150 1150 or H 1150-M. Precipitation hardened stainless steel alloys exhibit improved strength, corrosion resistance, superior durability and performance under heat and stress.
For applications that require performance in high heat conditions, 15-5 PH can be heat treated after it has been precipitation hardened to provide improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking at high temperatures. In order to minimize distortion and stress in the finished product, fabrication is recommended after the metal has been heat treated.
The chemical composition of 15-5 PH is:
Chromium: between 14.0 and 15.50 percent
Nickel: between 3.50 and 5.50 percent
Copper: between 2.50 and 4.50 percent
Columbium plus Tantalum: between 0.15 and 0.45 percent
Manganese: up to 1.00 percent
Silicon: up to 1.00 percent
Carbon: up to 0.07 percent
